Vertigo is horrible!

Make It Monday ~

Normally I use Monday's for showcasing a craft or sewing project that I've made or helped my kids to make.  I try to work at least a week (usually two weeks) in advance, so if I can't get a post done one day, then it's not a big deal.  Normally that works really well for me.

A little over a week ago, I woke up at 2 am with my entire world spinning.  I had a case of vertigo.  I've had it before.  In my case, it's hereditary.  My mom gets it too.  It is always horrible, but it usually only lasts for a few hours so I just crawl back in bed and sleep it off.  So, I crawled to the bathroom and then climbed right back in bed.  When my alarm went off, I tried to sit up and get out of bed, I realized that there was no way that was happening.  I woke Ben up and told him I had vertigo and that he would have to take the kids to church by himself.  Which is exactly what he did.

Ben and the kids had to come home early because Ben had to get to the airport.  He was flying to Mexico for work for a week.  When he left, I still wasn't feeling well, but I wasn't worried.  It only lasts for a few hours and then I'm totally fine.  Except I wasn't totally fine.  I was so dizzy and so nauseous.  Nothing I did helped at all.  The only thing I could do was lay in bed and not talk or move.  I was down and out for over a week.  I ended up going to the doctor twice and was put on 3 different medications.  I had to do these weird head maneuvers to try and jiggle the equilibrium part of my ears back into the right place.

Today was the first day in NINE days that I woke up and wasn't dizzy.  You have no idea how amazing that is.  It's unreal how impossible it is to function when you have vertigo.  Just imagine riding the Tilt-A-Whirl all day long while simultaneously having terrible all-day-long morning sickness.  It is not awesome.

So, I'm just grateful to be feeling better.  I'll be back to regular posts in the next couple of days.

Allergy Safe Chocolate Frosting

Foodie Friday ~

We love this Chocolate Frosting.  After trying to tweak other chocolate frosting recipes to line up with our food allergies and not having much luck, I decided to scrap it and start over.  This took quite a bit of testing and tweaking, but I'm super happy with the result.  Everyone who has tried this frosting loves it.  I don't miss the butter or sugar at all.

Chocolate Frosting

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Using electric beaters, mix until smooth and creamy.
  2. Spread on top of brownies after they have cooled for 5-10 minutes.  Let the brownies continue to cool another 10 minutes or more before cutting them and eating them.

Basement Workroom Reveal

Welcome Home Wednesday ~

Look at this amazing work space down in my basement.  We had to build a new wall, hang some old cabinets,  give the walls a fresh coat of paint, set up our old shelves, make and clean up several messes, and a whole lot of organizing.  It was totally worth it.  What do you think?

I can't believe how happy I am about this project!  We actually finished it in October and we've been loving it!  We still have to put some carpet down under the table, but other than that, it's finished!  We even have the carpet, we just need to find the time.

You can read more about the creation of this workroom here.

Before:  Here are the bare shelves so you can see how we set everything up.  First, I painted the walls.  I didn't want to stare at the ugly concrete while we spent time down here.  We were able to re-use some of the cabinets from the original kitchen.  They fit perfectly down here.  We also re-used the shelving from the basement in our old house.  I'll keep using it for food storage, like I did at the old house.

During:  Then we started working on another part of the basement and everything that was in the way got dumped in my new space.  Sadly, it sat like this for a long time.  Every time I went down into the basement to work on organizing it I only made a little bit of progress before getting overwhelmed.

What really got me moving was my daughter, Breezy.  I'm homeschooling her this year and we've been doing it at the dining room table.  It's been fine, but she really wants a space where she can spread out without having to clear it all away before meals.  One morning she grabbed all of her school books and took them downstairs.  She planted herself not he couch across from my workroom and said, "Mom, I'm doing school right here until I can move over to the table."  Well, that was motivating.  After several days of working and organizing, I finished it up!

After:  Finished!!  See how happy Breezy is to have space to spread out and work without interruptions?  I love it!!  Now we just need to lay the carpet under the table and it will be perfect!

Bye Bye Water Deposits

Tidy Up Tuesday ~

We have black quartz counters and I LOVE them.  The thing is, our water leaves water deposits and my black countertops start turning white pretty quickly.  With the craziness of the holiday's, I haven't taken care of them in quite a while.  So, why not show you how to remove them?  It's super easy!

Scour Off is part of Shaklee's Get Clean** line of cleaners and I love them all!  It is nontoxic, uses natural abrasives and biodegradable surfactants, has no harsh chemicals or phosphates.  It smells like cherries and is so easy to use.  I not only use it for removing water deposits, I use it to scrub my oven, clean the glass top on my range, and to clean the cloudy film that sometimes forms on my shower door.  It works great with either the super microfiber cleaning cloth** or the miracle scrubber pad**.  Did I mention how inexpensive it is?  It costs less than other cleaners I've tried and it works better than every single one!

    Framed Name Art

    Make It Monday ~

I love making crafts.  I have a whole shelf (as in a whole shelving unit with 5 actual shelves) in my basement that is just for my crafty stuff.  Playing with colorful paper, ribbon, paper punches and stamps makes me so happy.

Since we were planning to go to Utah and spend Christmas with Ben's grandma, I wanted to make her something special as a Christmas present.  This is what I came up with.  :)

I've actually made this as a Christmas gift for several families.  I use a different color scheme for each one, but they are all pretty similar to each other.  Maybe I should finally make one for us?!

Black Bean Brownies with Chocolate Frosting

    Foodie Friday ~

We LOVE this recipe!  I got the basic recipe from Chocolate Covered Katie, but I tweaked it to fit our needs.  I also created the recipe for the Chocolate Frosting which is so yummy and super healthy.  I hope you enjoy!

    Black Bean Brownies

    Ingredients:
    • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained and rinsed well
    • 4 Tbsp cocoa powder
    • 1 cup quick oats
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1 cup pure maple syrup
    • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
    • 1 1/2 Tbsp pure vanilla extract
    • 1 tsp baking powder
    • 1 cup mini chocolate chips (we use Enjoy Life) **
    Directions:
    1. Preheat oven to 350F and grease a 9x13 pan.
    2. Add all ingredients except chocolate chips to a high powered blender (I use a Blendtec) and blend until smooth.  It should feel smooth when you rub it between your fingers.  If it feels grainy, then you need to blend longer.
    3. Stir in the chocolate chips and pour into prepared pan.  Spread out batter until it is smooth on top.
    4. Bake for 20-22 minutes.  They should test done with a toothpick, just watch out for chocolate chips.  You make have to check it a few times until you are able to find a spot without a chocolate chip.
    5. Let them cool for 15-20 minutes before trying to remove them from the pan.  This allows them to become firm.  If you don't let them cool enough, then they crumble...but they are delicious either way.
** I only use the chocolate chips if we are NOT going to frost them.  If we use the Chocolate Frosting, then I omit the chocolate chips.  You can do whatever you like.  :)

    Stand in your majesty!

    Thoughtful Thursday ~

I love this so much!  I truly believe that we are no accident.  Our time here on this Earth is no accident!  We are eternal beings.  We had life before we came here and we will have life after we leave.  There is a God in Heaven, and I know that He knows who I am.  More than that, I know that He loves me and He cares about my well-being.

It's so easy for me to get discouraged and feel like what I do doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.  It's easy for me to compare myself to others and in my eyes, I always fall short.  During these down times I find myself on my knees, crying out to the heavens, and asking for peace to enter my heart.  I recently found myself in this heart aching place again and as I poured my heart out to my God, this quote entered my mind.  A wave of peace, love, and purpose washed over me and in that moment, I knew.  I knew that no matter what struggles I have, God has my back.  More importantly, He has my heart...He's holding it in his hands.

    Shelves make my heart melt.

    Tidy Up Tuesday ~

When we ripped out our entire kitchen and redid it, we bought kitchen cabinets from Ikea.  We love them and have been very happy with them.  We used 2 corner cabinets, but we didn't want to use the spinning shelf unit with it.  I feel like they waste space and are hard to clean out and I just wasn't interested.  Ben assured me that he could easily build some shelves for me that would allow me to maximize the space.  Great plan, right?  Right.  Except for the part where it was so low on the priority list that they never actually got made.  Instead I had all of my pots and pans and plug-in appliances piled on top of each other in my corner cabinets.  Every time I had to get something out, I had to unpack half of the cabinet and then pile it all back in.

A few weeks ago Ben watched the unpacking and repacking process and the next day I got shelves!  Squee!!!  I'm so excited.  Who knew a few shelves could make my heart flutter?  What do you think?

    Here's the left corner cabinet.

    Here's the right corner cabinet.

    Valentine Fortune Cookies

    Make It Monday ~

These are super easy and super cute!  I already had everything on hand, so they were a really quick way to do homemade valentine's for my kiddos.

    Supplies:

    • Several sheets of 12x12 scrapbook paper
    • A cup to trace around (3 1/2 to 4 inches wide)
    • A pencil to trace with
    • Scissors
    • Cute saying to go inside the fortune cookies
    • Glue dots or double stick tape.

    Directions:

Choose your paper and create your "fortune"

Trace your cup onto the back of your paper.  You should be able to fit 9 circles on each sheet.
    cut the circles out.

Fold the fortunes in half lengthwise so they will fit better in the fortune cookies.

Lightly fold the circle in half with right sides facing each other.  Don't crease all of the way, just pinch the middle.

Turn the circle over and place the fortune perpendicular to the little pinch mark you made.

Carefully curve your paper around the fortune and pinch it closed at the top with one hand.

Using your fingers on the edges and your index finger in the middle, bend the fortune cookie in half on the crease you already made.

The edges of the circle will fold on top of each other.

Secure with a glue dot.  You can also use double stick tape, but I think glue dots hold better.

Ta-da!  You now have a super cute fortune cookie valentine.  :)

    Attempted Car Theft

So, someone tried to steal our car last night.  It was sitting in our driveway.  I am so upset and unsettled.  They weren't successful, but it still threw me for a loop.  They broke the ignition and messed up the steering column.  I had to call the police and have them come out to file a report.  Then I had to call insurance and get a tow truck.  We took it to the dealership and got a rental while they fix it.  We weren't planning on spending almost $1,000 on our vehicle right after coming home from a cross country trip.  Today has been a crappy day.  :(  I'm going to bed.

    Protein Power Balls

We just came back from an epic cross country trip.  We went to Utah to spend Christmas with Ben's grandma.  The kids had the most amazing time getting to know their great-grandma better.  She is one of the sweetest women I know.  While I spend the next week climbing out from under a pile of laundry and a stinky fridge that I didn't clear out before we left for 2 weeks, I thought I would share one of our favorite treats.  This is one of my most popular posts.  Every time I make these for my family or for anyone else they are gone within minutes.

These are so delicious!  My whole family loves these.  We make them all the time for after school snacks and we take them as treats to church activities and to pot-luck dinners.  I have never met a kid (or grown-up) who doesn't love them.  This is also something that we can eat with our food allergies, so that's a bonus!  I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

    Protein Power Balls

    Ingredients:
    • 2 cups oatmeal
    • 1 cup coconut flakes
    • 1 cup natural peanut butter
    • 1 cup Chocolate Energizing (Non-GMO) Soy Powder**
    • 1/2 cup ground flax deeds
    • 3/4 cup mini chocolate chips
    • 2/3 cup honey
    • 2 Tbsp chia seeds
    • 1 Tbsp vanilla
    Directions:
    1. Stir together honey, peanut butter, and vanilla until smooth.
    2. Add other ingredients and mix well.  I either use a mixer or my hands.
    3. Cover and let chill for 30 minutes.
    4. Once chilled roll into balls.
    5. Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to a week.  Freezes well.
    6. Makes between 3 and 4 dozen depending on the size of the balls you make.

    New Beginnings

Are you overwhelmed and stressed out?  Do you feel like you are barely keeping your head above water?  Do you feel like you would lose it at any moment and all of the balls in the air will come crashing down on top of you?  I've been there!!  I spent years of my life there!!

We had 4 kids in 4.5 years and some days it was all I could do to hang on until bedtime.  I hated feeling that way.  I hated feeling like I was missing out on the lives of my children because I was too overwhelmed to enjoy them.  I remember talking to Ben countless times about feeling lost and being unhappy.  The thing is, I wanted to stay home with my kids.  I wanted to be the one to see their first steps and hear their first words.  I wanted to be the one to kiss their boo-boos and be there when they came home from school.  Being a stay at home mom was exactly what I wanted, but once I had it, I wasn't enjoying it.  I felt like I must be a horrible person!

Luckily, I was blessed to go to church with some amazing women who had been in my shoes and knew how it felt.  I learned countless lessons about life and motherhood from them.  As I asked questions and tried their suggestions, I figured out how to enjoy my children and my role as their mother.  The more I worked at it, the better things got.  I slowly figured out how to organize my time and my days in a way that worked for us.  Then the craziest thing happened.  Someone asked me how I was able to find joy in motherhood instead of feeling overwhelmed and the process started over again.  Except this time I was the slightly older, slightly wiser mother offering love, comfort and direction to a new mother in need.

That's when I realized that I wasn't alone in feeling the way I felt.  That's when I realized that TONS of women feel overwhelmed.  That's when I realized that if what I had to say helped some of the moms that I went to church with, then it might help other moms too.  And that's when my blog was born.  Unfortunately, I got caught up in getting followers and connecting with other strong blogs that I lost sight of my original purpose...to help women find help, hope, and joy through their motherhood journey.

The more I sought for pageviews and comments and likes, the less I liked blogging.  I started posting less and less and finally stopped.  Well, this is me reclaiming myself, my life, and my blog.  This is me saying, "Who cares about pageviews!  Who cares about people liking me!"  This is me turning my heart back to my fellow sisters in need.

Are you ready for a new year, because I sure am.  Let's get back to the work of creating a heart full of happy!
